Summary:
Explores the myth surrounding the rune stone found outside Kensington, Minnesota, that told a North American origin story, predating Christopher Columbus's exploration, in which Viking missionaries reached what is now Minnesota in 1362 only to be massacred by Native Americans. Examines how this story became an important part of the local Nordic identity and how the Kensington Rune Stone is a form of civil religion. Discusses how the rune stone became a source of Scandinavian pride and how it was used to create fear and hatred of Native Americans in Minnesota. Includes color and black-and-white photographs.
