Summary:
In 1859 the plaster mould for the "Statue of Freedom" that was to be placed atop the Capitol dome in Washington, D.C., was crumbling. No engineer or sculptor could figure it out, until Philip Reid--at that time still a slave--stepped up with his own ideas about how to save the statue. He was right, and today we have him to thank for the "Statue of Freedom."
