Summary:
"This book is one of multiple efforts to support Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota survivance through a continuance of stories... of land and leadership shared by members and friends of the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Community. Undergraduate researchers conducted interviews during Fall 2020--over Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic--in two Justice and Peace Studies courses at the University of St. Thomas (JPST 275 Qualitative Methods and JPST 365 Leadership for Social Justice)... Although it is not comprehensive in scope, this book presents a coherent collection of historical and contemporary narratives that present a composite picture of the community... [with] sections on five themes... These themes are represented by stories offering a glimpse of the rich history of this community and the complexity of struggles and survivance. This volume complements the resources available on the MMDTC website (www.mendotadakota.com) and the growing research carried out by MMDTC members and supporters in pursuit of federal recognition as a tribe"--Pages 8-9.
