The fourth, final volume of Picasso's life covers the Spanish Civil War and the beginning of World War II. Richardson draws on exhaustive, original research from interviews and the Picasso family archives. Picasso, contributing to André Breton's Minotaur magazine and spending time with Man Ray, Salvador Dalí, Lee Miller, and the poet Paul Éluard, began writing surrealist poetry and created his most famous etching, Minotauromachie. In April 1937, the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War inspired Picasso's vast masterwork of the same name, painted for the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris World's Fair. In 1943, Picasso met Françoise Gilot, who would replace surrealist photographer Dora Maar as his muse.
