The true story of Della Fahley, born into a large family in 1922 in Bloomington, Minnesota, who dreamed of traveling the world. In 1944, unbeknownst to her parents, the 21-year-old applied for a position with the American Foreign Service in Washington, D.C., hoping to work on assignment for various embassies. From the time of Della's arrival in Washington in 1944, through 1947, she wrote letters home every few days describing in detail her adventures, predicaments, daily life, and views of the world, including experiences from her assignments in Australia and Egypt. The letters covered a wide range of topics, including politics, WWII, life with dignitaries and celebrities, and her own mild notoriety, with enclosures such as fan mail, newspaper articles, and historic announcements.
