Summary:
"After a 2200 mile solo canoe trip from Grand Portage, Minnesota to Hudson Bay, Jerry Pushcar wanted to see more of the untamed wilderness of North America during his lifetime. Waters Beneath My Feet is the personal memoir of Pushcar's three-year solo odyssey from New Orleans, Louisiana to Nome, Alaska. His compelling journey began with paddling the mighty Mississippi upstream (while battling barge traffic), but the danger didn't stop there. Building winter cabins by hand, navigating the sometimes tricky human encounters along the way, and surviving the unforgiving wilderness were all precursors to the final test: the Bering Sea. He almost didn't make it. Near the end, communication with Pushcar was lost for weeks. Just as the local newspaper in Nome, Alaska, was preparing his obituary, "Lost at Sea," a bush pilot spotted him walking along a stark, snow-covered cliff above the Bering Sea. After being offered a ride for his final 30 miles to Nome, Pushcar declined. "I've walked this far, I might as well finish it." The record-breaking journey ended at 5:36 P.M. in Nome on Nov. 12, 1977."--page 4 of cover.
