Eighth grader Indigo uses her passion for journalism to try to win back recently drifted away friends Abbie and Manning, finding success when she breaks a story about unfair school detention policies. While researching the story, she came across writings by Black journalist and activist Ida B. Wells and they inspire her to run for class president. As she continues to bring up injustices through her campaign, her newfound popularity fades and her friends and peers begin to criticize her. Through Ida's letters however, she learns to keep fighting for justice, even if it makes her unpopular.
