Dystopian novel chronicles Rueben Slege's account of a curse haunting his family, that begins with his father being locked in a cabin in Wisconsin and follows to his older brothers--one hanged for the murder of his wife and the other committed to an asylum for stalking a woman he loved. Rueben lives in central Iowa in a home near a set of gates to the underground city of Des Moines. When the woman he loves enters the forbidden city, Reuben follows to retrieve her and must survive the horrors of its underworld society.
