Examines nineteenth-century American ideas about race, health, and class and how the early science of gynecology abused and mistreated black enslaved women and Irish immigrant women through medical experimentation including caesarean sections, ovariotomies, and obstetric fistula repairs. Discusses how the work of early gynecologists created scientific myths regarding these women and perpetuated lies about the differences between whiteness and blackness, men and women, and the inferiority of other races or nationalities that persist to this day.
