Former Posadas County Sheriff Bill Gastner is now enjoying life as a New Mexico Livestock Inspector. But an ordinary day is interrupted when Bill is called by Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman to help investigate the death of Bill's friend George Payton who seemingly died from a heart attack. When the small herd of cattle Bill had just counted is found alone on the highway, it becomes clear that the cowhand has disappeared. Bill and Estelle have their hands full trying to uncover the truth about Payton's death and the cowhand's disappearance.
